The concept of Carmen

A Carmen is a house with a garden in the Albaycin, the antique quarter of Granada. In this quarter, which had been the last muslim realm of Spain. It is called Carmen. Everywhere else in Spain it is called Cortijo. Carmen has its origin in the arabian word "carma" which means grapevine. It is typical for Carmenes that they grow vine as a decoration.

Mainly Carmen is well known as a female name.

There are a lot of other explanations but I myself favour one of the more charming versions: When an attractive lady was stepping out of a Carmen she was adressed as Carmen. Could it be possible that the female name Carmen is related to the charming appearance of a woman, beautiful like a grapevine and tasting sweet like wine, stepping out of a Carmen ...
